The Rain

Summary of the poem

“Everyone is born equally capable but lacks equal opportunities”

This poem is composed by W.H.Davies. He was born in wales England. Nature and problems of the poor are his favourite subjects. There is no denying the fact that enjoying equal opportunities to prove one’s mettle ensures the smooth flow of things in a society. When the upper hand take care of the lower hand, there comes a sense of social security and satisfaction among the needy. This is the lesson that the poet wants to impart to us.

The poet has paid rich tributes to the nature. The objects of nature attract the poet. He has delicately described the natural moments of the rain when the rain drops fall on the leaves of the trees, they start shining brightly. The top leaves symbolize the rich people, whom Allah has bestowed with countless blessings. These people are very miser. They give alms to the poor in little amount. The poet feels very exalted in this melodious atmosphere After the rain stops the sun comes out. It imparts rays to every dark thing. Every thing looks very fresh, bright and lovely. Sun is the symbol of kindness, life and glory. The natural sight of the poem gives great pleasure. The inequality in the society is very painful for the poet. The deep concern for the poor and love for nature are beautifully described in the theme of the poem. The poet hopes that there would be equality in the society just like the sunshine which spreads all over the world equally. This sunshine is both for the dark round drops and rich green leaves.

The simple and spontaneous mood of expression has made the poem adorable. The musical quality of the poem is appealing. The poet has conveyed his message in a didactic manner. The diction simply suits the spontaneous flow of the peom.

A wondrous light will fill

Each dark, round drop,

I hope the sunshines bright;

It will be a lovely sight.
